Great little system for use as a travelling companion. Provides a lot more functionality than a smartphone and is obviously easier to use for email etc. With the camera and skype, communications are pretty easy and flexible BUT it's not a mobile phone. For my needs, working while travelling and creating various documents etc its perfect especially with the long battery life; I typically get 6-7 hours. It's not a laptop or a desktop, so don't expect that kind of performance.
I immediately upgraded to 2GB memory and installed windows 7 Home premium and office 7, runs like a dream, just don't bother with most of the Samsung software add-ons, waste of time and slows it down as they tend to be running in background in case you need them. The restore function is worth keeping as it allows you to restore from an image on the second partition at boot time if disaster should strike!! So far no need of it.
Still very happy after 3 weeks of using my new toy!

I love the Samsung notebooks. [We have 4, 2 x NC10s (1 yr old), 1 x NC20 and this latest N140] We run them with the XP they came with, but remove all other software - go careful though, you do need to keep most of the Samsung stuff so the mousepad, camera, wifi etc work - google it if you're not sure there's plenty of help in forums. [Although they will work out of the box, budget a day's work to set them up properly]
We use a few open-source / free software packages like Open Office, Foxit PDF Reader, Cute PDF writer, AVG etc. The only memory hogging commercial software I use is Adobe Photoshop Elements, Dreamweaver and Firefox. Other than that we work 'in the cloud' on Google Chrome and so these are perfect. [If you are a microsoft, norton or other big-name, bloaty, memory-hogging software devotee, these may not have the capacity for you, or you may slow then down,... but if you love microsoft you're probably ok with working at half my speed ;)]
The way we use them they are super quick [I also use Auslogics software to ensure registry, disk defragging, settings etc are kept at optimum speed], have great battery life (at least 4 hours with high screen brightness), and plenty of hard-drive space for daily use. We use ours as our only computers - often connected to a large monitor - and so they are on for 16 hours per day, every day. [We don't have a TV so as well as long days of work we often use these to watch streamed content in the evenings too.]
The 3 usbs are about as many as you can expect on such a little machine, so you may need some adaptors to give you a few more. When at my desk I use - keyboard, mouse, printer, external hard-drive, camera, ipod - so sometimes I need more than 3 of these at once.
As you'll see they are very light - you can carry them about one handed like a proper video phone whilst talking on Skype for example. They are also smart and dirt resistant with their glossy black outer and anti-bacterial coated keyboard.
The touchpad (in-built mouse equivalent) I found annoying as it comes- I was forever zooming accidentally - but this can easily be corrected in the control panel settings.
You can record sound directly from the soundcard (apparently not all notebooks/laptops/soundcards can). For example if you wanted to save the sound from a youtube video (of course take care with copyright), just change the volume settings (record) to not be mute and use something like the free Audacity.
The only quibble about the N140 is the angle the screen will tilt back - not quite enough when you are using it on the move. It's no worse that the NC20, but not as good as the NC10. The other concern is the keyboard lettering is stuck on - although that's not a problem now I doubt whether it'll last much beyond a year or 2 of our intensive use - but by then we'll probably have upgraded.
P.S. Now Amazon deliver straight to Europe it's perfect for people like us (we wanted this N140 in Spain). I was a little nervous about whether it would survive the postal system, but it is well packaged and arrived in perfect condition, within a few days.

I've been looking for a small sub-£300 netbook for ages and finally settled on the Samsung N140 - running XP Home (rather than limited functionality of Windows 7 Starter). Really pleased with it - the 10.1" screen size is great, although the resolution of 1024 x 600 is a little poor - it would be better if it was like the Sony equivalent W series which runs at 1366 x 768. However this is just a small niggle - rather than anything really to worry about. Besides, the battery life of the N140 is truly excellent - and significantly better than the VPCW12S1E/W (N140 = 9hours and Sony = 7.5hours). I'm just using for websurfing, Itunes and running remote desktop to connect to my work PC - and for all this it is ideal. Just to confirm that Bluetooth is included too. It also comes with a soft case which was good as these sorts of things are normally pricey extras! I would certainly recommend the N140!

This is our second netbook. Compared with the first, Asus Eee 1000H, this is just a little bit better ... higher capacity disc drive, slightly better keyboard (larger Shift key, Page Up and Page Down), slightly lighter and better-balanced (it's easier to hold with one hand) and above all a better battery life. This is specified as "up to 11 hours". We can't vouch for that but it certainly goes for several hours without showing any signs of flagging. (One new feature is that when idle the screen automatically dims without switching off and you can alter the settings for this.) We're delighted with it.
Why 4 stars rather than 5? We're finding that it sometimes refuses to go in to and out of hibernation properly and needs to be reset. This may not be hardware fault: it could be a Windows problem, but it's irritating.

Got the XP home version. First thing, got rid of the Mcafee whatnot. Installed Firefox next, then added all the usual FF extensions, eg Adblockplus, Tabmix, Firegestures, etc etc. Firefox is as bloated with these extensions as it can be, and running like a breeze. I do not intend to upgrade the memory to 2gb, it's running as smooth as can be expcted with the pre-installed 1gb. Very nice and clear screen. Keyboard perfectly adequate for my largish fingers. Bottom line: A brilliant machine, very well made, nice looking, and the proverbial icing on the cake is the very long battery life.
