 "Good purchase" 2009-12-23
By Terry27 (Manchester, UK.)
I did a lot of reading around before purchasing this netbook and the NC10 was almost always praised. I have not been dissapointed at all. It has met and exceeded my expectations. It is obviously no work horse. But for everday tasks it handles them very well. The build quality is good and the look is very nice. I upgraded to 2Gb RAM straight away, so I cannot tell you how well it runs on the standard 1Gb. I have had it for six months now and it has not missed a beat. I would definatley recommend it. The only thing is does struggle on is playing HD youtube videos in full screen hich is a bit strange as avi's and other video formats play fine in full screen.

"Great little machine but WATCH OUT!" 2009-12-11
By ms.glug
I have no problems with the NC-10 and I'm not going to repeat the praise of others. It is a great little machine for people who want something light when they're on the move. However BEWARE! I bought the NC-10 in March of this year and it's just beginning to dawn on me that I've been diddled on the software front. All the Microsoft Office products it comes with are from 2002. I'm beginning to have problems with some of them which Microsoft is being less than helpful with as the product is old, out of date, and has now been replaced by a newer version. What to do....? My case is more problematic (any suggestions welcome) but if you haven't bought it yet - check before you do!

 "Top of the Net" 2009-11-02
By pepemia (scotland)
I was looking for a new laptop initially. Im not a demanding techie person- I like a laptop for surfing the net, checking emails and writing some word files. I also store music on it.

However when I saw this netbook I was really impressed. Its really easy to find information on the internet on the NC10 so I was able to do plenty of research.

Firstly this is an ideal. light size for transporting. Much, much better than heavy laptops. The battery life is good- it usually lasts me about 5 hours.I tend to plug into the mains at home. The mains cable for it is a good size for reaching various plug points.

It connects well to the internet, has good response and is really nice to type on. The keyboard is well spread out with firm keys.

The screen is a good size and I dont have to strain to read- which was what I was hesitant about buying this. It doesnt have a dc/dvd drive. However I bought a seperate slim drive that works really well.It has 3 usb ports and a headphone socket and mic socket.

I was looking for a laptop or netbook with microsoft works, so it worried me this didnt. It comes with open office which is compatable with microsoft works and has worked well for me.

Overall im really pleased with it -it has all the applications I was looking for Internet explorer, windows media ,open office and Windows messenger.

It looks really smart, easily maintained and very portable.

The only thing I find annoying is the small mouse pad but I bought a seperate net mouse.

So I really like this netbook, and am pleased I went for this small neat size. It wasnt an impulsive buy and with external hardrives etc I can see this lasting me a while. Definately recommended.

"Good value for money !" 2009-10-09
By Claude Durand (France)
Overall, a purchase that I am happy with.

I needed some kind of portable solution, basically for professional needs ; I do not care for games, multimedia fidgeting etc on a portable computer, I am more interested in reduced volume and weight and autonomy on batteries and I must say I got what I needed.

Of course, it is not a cannonball in terms of speed, but who cares when working on office documents or navigating the internet ; most times the speed limit is the one imposed by the connection or the remote site consulted, so this is not really a problem.

The keyboard is a pleasure to use, I would not say the same about the touch pad but anyhow I use a travel mouse and the pad is of little importance.

The SAMSUNG utility for locating WLAN access point is very convenient.

If you use it as SAMSUNG has configured it, your data will be in the same hard disk volume as the OS, which is exactly what wise people don't want to happen... Creating a separate volume ("E") for your data is a good idea but not easy to achieve unless you use a nice little freeware for partitioning called EASEUS Partition Master 4.0 Home Edition ; I recommend it.

"It was a lovely machine until it broke and AVIDES MEDIA won't fix or replace it" 2009-10-08
By Aelfgifu55 (England)
Here's what I wrote before it died....

I'd been wanting a light-weight laptop for doing "easy" PC work for a long time - for reading emails, working on a web client called Confluence, writing documents; documentation work with a little bit of simple graphics thrown in.

This machine is perfect for that. It weighs hardly anything, so it's easy to carry back & forth to work (and use on the train). It's fast to boot up, the keyboard is big enough to actually use. It has a nice bright screen and it's quick. The battery life is outstanding.

I'm making a big effort to make sure it remains quick. I have been very careful about what I install it on it - I use open source Java apps like Open office org instead of Microsoft Office, Gimp instead of Photoshop, and so on.

I don't know if it would be so wonderful if I treated it like a normal laptop and loaded it down with all the usual gumpf, but for what I use it for, it's perfect.

... then it failed with "Cannot find Operating System". I returned it to the vendor AVIDES MEDIA, who eventually told me that it wasn't under warranty (even though it was only 4 months old) because they said that I had "de-installed the Operating System". I did NOT do that and told Avides that. They then returned the machine telling me they had repaired it. They have NOT actually repaired it - but it does has a new error message. Now it says "press any key to boot from floppy". It doesn't have a floppy or CD drive. I'm reasonably sure that with a lot of effort on my part I might be able to get it working again. No thanks to Avides - they're quick at shipping but they're rubbish if anything goes wrong.

 "Was worried, now happy" 2009-12-22
By TaGordon (United Kingdom)
Bought this because I needed to get a seperate machine, from my work machine, for personal email, and other bespoke bits of software that I like to access, also I wanted to get another XP machine before XP taken off the shelf. My concern was whether, compared to my work machine, which has a higher spec CPU (2.2ghz Dual Core), the lower spec CPU would feel to slow. Reality is that I find this machine just as quick, if not quicker sometimes, than my work machine, probably because it is not running all the enterprise software that sucks up so many CPU cycles. I like very much the Samsung backup software on the NC10 that means I have the comfort that if all goes wrong I can quickly get the machine back into working order. Only reason I ducked a star was because the Sumsung additions, which are pretty useful, don't work properly if you setup a standard user. You pretty much have to run as admin if you want all the Samsung provided extras to work smoothly.

I bought this product for my father.

The quality is very good. Netbook is easy and comfortable in use.

But the main thing you all need to know about this equipment is battery life.

I formatted the battery and I left it charging for whole night. At the morning, I created a play list of few movies and I started playing them on full volume and full brightness.

6.5h later, it was still playing! Amazing battery life.

You can't go wrong with this netbook!

This little machine solves the problem of overseas travel and keeping my business going. I always found a lap top too heavy and cumbersome especially with limited allowances when flying. The NC10 is so light it can be carried in one hand. I soon got used to the small screen and despite warnings of slow operation I found it quick enogh for surfing, checking e-mails and sending attachments.

I was looking for a neat transportable netbook that substituted for my home computer. This works every bit as well as my main computer for all the tasks that I require from it. Connecting to the internet, when my wife is surfing on the main machine, is a doddle. Easy to use, pleasant feel and easy on the eye. Although the mouse pad works well, I have always preferred to use a mouse. Bought a USB mouse and it works a treat. Also purchased a USB external drive to add programmes (Student Office) and other programmes that I use regularly. Very happy with my purchase.

By N666NDA (London)
All in all not a bad machine... I have had mine a couple of weeks now and am happy with the Samsung N310. The only bad points I feel are the speed... It's not even close to my PC or Laptop speed for browsing on the net or general software applications. This somethimes gets to the point where I will just turn it off and go find a PC. The second is that the screen is obviously very small (10"), which I knew before I purchased, what I did not know was that you cannot really adjsut the screen resoloution to suit (it has just two screen settings, neither that great.

I would definatley NOT recommend this as your only machine, however if you just need someting on the go, I feel this machine will be hard to beat. It is light, sturdy and despite the size, very easy to type on. I like the fact that I can take this machine all over my house and it never looses WiFi and I also love the battery life, which is much much better than my Sony Laptop.

 "Brilliant Little Netbook" 2009-07-03
By J. Trevor (Solihull, West Midlands)
I have had my N310 for just over two weeks now and I am very impressesed with how well it has performed so far.

The keyboard is very easy to type on compared to other netbooks due to the key spacing. The screen size is ok for watching things like iPlayer and the clarity is very good.

The battery life is ok (not anywhere near as good as some other netbooks) but I have struggled to get near the reported 3 hours battery life, this is probably due to the fact that I don't use power save functions when not mains connected. I am now waiting until the new 6 cell battery comes out and will give around 10 hours.

I purchased a sweex neoprene cover for it and this holds the charger as well. The netbook is so light that I can hardly notice the wieght difference in my bag.

I had read about Ubuntu as an alternative OS that works well with netbooks because of their slow boot times ect on windows. But I have not noticed any significant difference between the N310 and my old dual core processor laptop.

Overall a very competent and compact little netbook that also looks the part, but is lacking all day battery life.

I have purchased 3 of these now, 1 last year (a years worth of use and still brilliant)

Got another two for family members. I personally love these little machines however I would have liked windows 7 on the new ones as I know some Microsoft employees have these and win 7 installed with no problems.

The touch pad is the downside but other than that overall excellent and well worth there price.

 "A great improvement" 2009-11-13
By K. Williamson (Spain)
I bought an Acer Aspire One just over a year ago to take with me on trips to England and to use in the house when I didn't want to fire up my desktop machine. The version I got runs Linpus Lite (Linux)and came with a three cell battery and 513Mb of RAM. It is easy to use and perfectly adequate for surfing the net. I even managed to edit photographs with it using Gimp software and upload them using Linux FTP software.

Then I decided to buy a Vodafone USB dongle to connect to the Internet whilst in England and that is where I started to struggle. I know that there is software available to work with Linux but I couldn't get it to run. I also struggled to find a way to network the Acer with my Windows Vista desktop, so I decided to buy a Window XP netbook for myself and give the Linux version to my wife.

I'd read quite a lot about the NC10 and knew someone who'd bought one. It seemed like the best choice available on the market at present.

Having bought one, I am happy to say that the reviews I read were all correct. The keyboard is the best I have used on any laptop; it has just the right amount of feel and travel. The screen is bright, clear and sharp as a pin and the battery life in comparison with the 3 cell Acer is fantastic.

Best of all though, all the software I am familiar with runs on the Samsung without a hitch including Canon's Digital Photo Professional which normally won't even install on netbooks because it requires a screen with a minimum resolution of 1024 x 768. Rather cleverly, Samsung have included a program called Easy Resolution Manager on their netbook which allows you to switch between 1024 x 600 and 1024 x 768.

With regards to the purchase process, I have bought a lot of stuff from Amazon recently some of which has been delivered directly to Spain and other items to my daughter in England. This was the first expensive item to come to Spain and was shipped by courier rather than post. I'm pleased to say that the service was fast and trouble free. In fact, I'd hardly finished my morning cuppa when the delivery man arrived at my doorstep. Full marks to Amazon for service and to Samsung for producing such a good netbook.

"Screen not working within 4 days of receipt" 2009-10-26
By Mr. EN Akbar (London, UK)
I received my laptop on Thursday and, on Friday, installed an extra 1GB memory, Microsoft Office 2007, connected to my wireless network and downloaded Mozilla Firefox. All quite simple really.

I next touched the laptop on Sunday afternoon for a bit of afternoon chatting on Skype before settling down to do some work on Microsoft Word. All fine.

Then, it happened. When I turned on the computer again, the blasted thing had lines going across the screen...then the screen turned white for a while before reverting back to lines. And it's still doing it. It's like a VHS needs tracking and I can't see a thing.

I called Amazon customer support who have suggested that I try the recovery disk first, otherwise "there's a problem with the screen" (really?!). It seems likely I'm going to have to return it along with the work I'd done on Sunday afternoon. But here's the snitch - Amazon don't have any replacements so I'll just have to make do with a refund.

Just like my relationships...it started off so well only to blow up in my face...

By Mr. C. D. More (UK)
I bought this to use at home for internet, music and office applications. The NC10 fits the bill perfectly. The screen is crisp and bright with a good sized keypad. The initial setup of the laptop is easy, you get the option to split the C: D: drive into sections (Default set at 70ish GB each) I set mine to 104 for D: (use for storage of music/work/pics etc) and for programs and XP use C: set about 40GB. Advantage is if XP gives up you dont lose all your data!

Wireless is fast and reliable and able to stream video without any probs.

Battery life seems good too with a full charge lasting 6+hours however this depends on what you are doing. Very impressed overall.

By Andrius Platakis (Vilnius, Lithuania)
I was looking forward to getting hands on this netbook. It was well spent money. The battery life is amazing, the full sized keyboard with big buttons makes the typing comfortable. The integrated peripherals work well, didn't encounter many problems. Also you should get rid of all the preloaded unnecessary software as it slows down the netbook. Get an upgrade of 2GB ram. The build quality is a little worse than the NC10, for one thing the display is 0.1' smaller as the frame around sides of the screen is wider than the NC10. Anyway, a great choice for a netbook. But if you have a NC10, you do need an upgrade to this model.

By Ms. Janet Haines (Bridport, Dorset)
Wanted a small computer to take travelling that really does have a long life battery. This little Samsung really hit the spot with it's 11 hours battery life. The only thing which was initially dissappointing was that on the first charge the battery indicator only registered 9.5hours - but after a few full charges it is now creeping up. Hopefully I will get the promised 11 hours in time. But even 9.5hours is pretty good compared to the 1hour I get on my laptop. The Samsung is neat and light, with a full size keyboard. Obviously not all web site pages fit onto the screen but it has to be easier to use than a mobile device that allows you to go online. It fits into its black neoprene sleeve really neatly and that provdes some cushioning as you take it around with you. Fits into a bag. Get yourself a dongle so you can get online anywhere and you are away. Love it.

 "NC140 works as advertised." 2009-11-04
By Mr. Kyriacos K. Orphanos
This machine was purchased after I lost my Asus eee. The main use for it is travelling on long haul flights so battery life is important and I'm happy to say that I can use it for at least 7 hours watching videos. The performance is adequate for the task, I was originally getting glitches in playback of DIVX files, but this was resolved after I removed the Windows Indexing facility. I've replaced it with Google desktop search which is much kinder to the hard drive and no more glitches as a result.

I'm planning to upgrade the memory to 2GB which I believe will further improve performance and will be a good investment of £30, but overall a great little PC, I would rate this very highly, the only real downside is the speakers which are not very powerful, even a cheap pair of headphones is a vast improvement, and on a flight I use headphones anyway. The amplifier output is very good and you only need the volume up at about 25%.

 "A great netbook" 2009-12-18
By K. Bonnici (Brussels, Belgium)
There are faster, bigger and more expensive netbooks/laptops out there. But if you want great basic functionality, a great keyboard and fantastic battery life in a little package, this is just superb value. Bought this for my gf who's a writer and wants to take it around everywhere and write, write, write, with a bit of net browsing and an occasional movie. The laptop performs these tasks very well on the go, fits in a handbag, and the charger stays at home as the N140 needs to be charged as often as a mobile phone. In reality 8 hrs of battery when in constant use (typing on word with music playing into headphones).

"Best netbook available at the moment" 2009-12-14
By Paul Wilcock (Dublin, Ireland)
I bought a white N140 and it is a very beautiful, well built machine with a real quality feel to it. Windows 7 starter is far better than XP but you do get the sense that it is slightly underpowered (compared to my NC10 running XP). Take heed to adjust your battery power settings, the default setting is for 50% processor power on battery use making it impossible to Skype or watch YouTube. When adjusted to 100% processor power the machine works well enough for all Netbook tasks and the battery still lasts for 9 hours.

"Solid netbook and long battery life" 2009-12-11
By L. Nguyen (London, UK)
I'm pretty happy with my purchase of the Samsung N140 netbook. It seems to work as it should. The keyboard is easy to use and the screen is clear. It runs live streaming TV ok but struggles with HD. The only thing I've noticed is that the battery meter changes a lot. E.g. when I turn it on, it says I have 7 hours left, then 10 minutes later the battery meter tells me I have only 5 hours left. I'm not sure why that is, but I suppose having an extra 5 hours left is still a lot of juice for a netbook.

Samsung N140 10.1-inch Netbook (Atom N270 1.6 GHz Processor, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, BT, Webcam, up to 10 Hour Battery Life, Windows 7 Starter, White)

Wow! Am I pleased or am I pleased! This little netbook is an amazing piece of kit.

Keyboard (anti-bacterial silver coating too)

I like:

++ size - keys are excellent for fast typing (I'm not a touch typist) and the 'reach' (from front to back) is much better than a normal size laptop, so it's really easy to type.

Not so keen:

-- It's taking a bit of time to get used to where the home and end keys are, and I keep hitting \ when I go for the shift key. Minor problems though.

Screen

I like:

++ size, but then that's why I bought it

++ quality of graphics really good for a netbook

Not so keen:

-- Resolution. It does not give a proportional size to a normal screen, but then neither does my 17 inch laptop. What I mean is that you have to do a bit more scrolling than on a normal desktop monitor although you can use CTRL+scroll to zoom in and out.

OS - Windows 7 starter

I like:

++ It being the latest Windows. I liked Vista and hated XP. I waited just long enough to get the N140 with Windows Starter. Brilliant! There's meant to be a maximum 3 programs open with Starter, but I haven't come across that yet and I am usually quite busy with OneNote, Word, Excel and Firefox.

++ Connected to my home wifi instantly, as it does to the printer, server and other PCs.

Not so keen:

-- Limitations of Win 7 Starter. Can't change desktop colours being the main one. Otherwise it does most of what I need. Can't watch DVDs on it, haven't had to yet, but it would be good to be able to. An upgrade to Home Premium is cheaper via the Windows Anytime Upgrade button than it is to buy from Amazon or elsewhere (at time of writing).

Battery life:

I like:

++ Long life per charge - 6+ hours of heavy, fast internet browsing. I could get more if I chose a less power hungry mode I guess, but then I want to use it. I always run the battery right down so that I will get the maximum life from it before it will need replacing (something I regret not doing with my laptop).

Other

I like:

++ 250GB hard drive - which I have formatted equally into 2 drives.

++ Integral Bluetooth - saves having a separate dongle.

++ Charging USB port to charge mobile etc when netbook shutdown- can be switched on or off.

No so keen:

-- Slip case - would be better if it had a pocket to hold my 3 dongle (Voda one doesn't like Windows 7 on this).

-- Extra cost of buying an external DVD drive.

-- Touchpad - but I don't like them anyway, always use a trackball with it and my laptop anyway.

-- Would have liked the option to have 2GB RAM with purchase, although I have upgraded separately, to be honest I'm not sure it has made much difference.

-- All the crapware. But easily uninstalled in favour of my own preferences.

-- When I use the 3 dongle I get a memory parity check error and shuts itself down, when I use home wi-fi it goes on forever without any errors.

Overall, I adore this netbook and I'm really pleased I hung on for it; not least because the price went down as well. Why settle for an older OS version, with a smaller drive when you can get this? I like the slightly glittery white too!

 "Love it!" 2009-11-30
By Cath Andrews (Southport, England)
Love it love it love it!! This is a good, stragithforward, easy to use netbook. It's light, slips easily into a (large-ish, admittedly) handbag, looks great and works more quickly than I'd expected. The battery life is amazing - hasn't yet run out on me and I use it regularly at airports for long periods of waiting time.

It comes with the Windows 7 starter and a trial 12 month Microsoft office, and with its own cover which is good protection. The keyboard is (obviously) smaller than a laptop but I've found it easy to negotiate with only occasional problems locating the shift key - but that's just a question of getting used to it.

No good if you want to play games or watch videos but if you want a good, basic netbook for working on the move, buy this - you really won't regret it.

"Great but only 3 hours bat life" 2009-12-02
By R. F. Culverhouse (Portsmouth)
I bought my N130 to use whilst travelling - Only used at home so far but very pleased. It is a delightful small machine - I've just obtained a slimline USB CD to load applications - you can do this by networking to a PC with a drive but I found this too challenging and possibly difficult mixing a Windows XP netbook with a Vista PC.

Just one thing detracts from the all-round delight, the N130 was billed as battery time up to 6 hours. I know it has a smaller battery capacity than the NC10 etc. but I have been surprised to only obtain 3 hours. I have looked after the battery, fully charging it when new etc. but even on the economy settings and with the display brightness turned down I can only get around three hours use before having to recharge.

"Problems with Samsung N130 Netbook" 2009-11-23
By A. King (UK)
I bought this as an early xmas gift for my wife and I would regard myself as fairly experienced when it comes to solving PC issues.

From the moment it started up the first time there was a problem. The sound processor would regularly make what I can only describe as a stutter. This happened every 10 seconds or so with power connected and about every 30 seconds or so when on battery. It did it right from the word go, during the music that the machine plays during Windows setup and this continued on any music playback eg. through Windows-Media-Player, which paused its visualisation for the duration of these stutters (approx 0.5 sec).

So clearly if I wanted to play any music on the machine, it wasn't going to be an issue I could ignore.

I contacted Amazon and they gave me the number for Samsung, who said they had sold a large number of these units and were not aware of any such problem.

They told me to download the latest sound driver from their site to install. I did as they suggested, but the driver setup did not complete, no matter how long I waited for it to do so. Samsung next suggested it be returned to amazon - which we did and asked for a straight replacement.

On receiving the second one - guess what? Identical fault as the first.

Samsung's advice then became (in my opinion) less constructive. They didn't seem to have a clue. So we returned this second unit and gave up on Samsung. We had an Asus EeePC and have been delighted with it.

In Samsung's defence, we are one of the unlucky minority who have only a 40kbps Dial-Up internet connection and doubtless this prevented the unit from automatically updating itself properly. Maybe if we'd had the time to wait for it to do so, it might have resolved the problem on its own, but the 100's of Mb necessary would literally have taken days or even weeks (I kid you not!)

That said, I don't think it is right for Samsung to ship a product to retailers with an unresolved fault. And this fault is such an obvious one that the worst Quality Controller in the world should be aware of it. In which case the Helpdesk at Samsung UK should also have known about it.

This is a shame. We have had some very good Samsung products in the past and ordered this Netbook on the strength of that reputation.

 "samsung n130" 2009-10-31
By C. Robins (uk)
The Samsung N130 is excellent although I am having some problems, everyday that goes by it tries to download some new software updates etc and when I do the wifi connection disapears. I have had to system restore twice now, so am not updating anything more, it might have something to do with me trying to download the yahoo software, maybe that could be the thing that sets its off.

Otherwise looks great nice and clean, I do wish that the lid had a latch to keep it down instead of just pushing it to but that is just me.

The one year free trial of microsoft office is great, as is the webcam and its toys to play with.

It is slower than my normal laptop which is annoying but I am just impatient.

Very good would definitely recommend to others is very handy and does fit in half of my many handbags, the way you can change the back lighting when on battery is great to make it brighter or dimmer, but it does make it go down quicker when brighter.

I am a freelance writer so use it for interviews and writing in public places cafes/pubs etc and it is great, as long as the table is high enough, some of the cafes have low tables and it is very hurtful on the back.

"Super netbook - Samsung have done it again!" 2009-12-10
By MISS.H.L-B (London, UK)
I bought this netbook as my mac ibook had just given up the ghost and I am starting my Phd so need a reliable computer. The Samsung N130 is terrific, easy to use and comes with super extras not usually found, in my experience, on netbooks. You get free McAfee virus scan and a year trial of Office 2007. Whilst after the year you have to buy the complete version it allows you time to use it and practice and you never know what Microsoft will come up with in a years time. The netbook is really light and the keyboard is a good size. The pink is a very pale colour so if you wanted it to be bright pink this wouldn't be the one for you on a colour basis. I am delighted with it and would recommend it to anyone. Internet browsing, as is to be expected is brilliant. Buy one, you'll love it!!
